🇺🇳🇨🇩 The UN prepares the early departure from DRC

The UN Security Council is expected to launch on Tuesday an early but gradual withdrawal of peacekeepers from the DR Congo from the end of 2023, as requested by Kinshasa.

Despite this situation in the east, the Congolese government has been calling for months for an "accelerated" withdrawal of Blue helmets, from the end of 2023 and not the end of 2024. It considers the UN force ineffective in protecting civilians against armed groups and militias that have been raging for three decades in eastern DRC.

Several members of the Council, notably the United States, have expressed doubts in recent months about the fact that the Congolese forces are ready to replace MONUSCO to ensure the security of the population.

From May 2024, MONUSCO will only be present in North Kivu and Ituri. From July 1, its workforce will be reduced by some 2,350 people.

🇨🇩 DR Congo opposition candidate suspends presidential campaign after violence

One of the main opposition candidates for Congo's presidential election next week, Moise Katumbi, suspended part of his campaign on Wednesday after violent clashes at one of his election rallies.

Live rounds were fired and several people were injured as Katumbi addressed supporters in the coastal town of Moanda on Tuesday.

The provincial government said in a statement that Katumbi's guards fired warning shots after the crowd grew rowdy, stoking tension and jostling. The police used tear gas to restore order.

Several people were injured, including a police officer who was seriously hurt, and investigations into the incident are ongoing, the statement said.

"In order to avoid further provocation, I have decided to temporarily suspend my meeting with citizens in the cities of Kananga and Tshikapa," Katumbi said.

🇨🇩🇺🇳 DR Congo asks U.N. to help with challenging election logistics

Democratic Republic of Congo's government has asked the United Nations to allow its peacekeeping mission to help with the logistics of organising national elections next week.

There have been challenges in the distribution of voting materials in DRC due to a lack of paved roads and conflict in rebel-plagued eastern provinces, where a U.N. peacekeeping mission is deployed.

The mission has already helped deliver voting materials in the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. Its mandate is currently limited to those areas.

But the Kinshasa government asked the U.N. Security Council to allow MONUSCO to extend its logistical support to other provinces.

🇿🇦🇮🇱 Pretoria warns South African citizens that they risk punishment for joining Israeli forces

"Such action can potentially contribute to the violation of international law and the commission of further international crimes, thus making them liable for prosecution in South Africa," the South African Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Naturalized citizens are at further risk of being stripped of their South African nationality for engaging in a war that the country "does not support or agree with," the ministry added.

In a separate statement, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called the events in Gaza a "genocide and slaughter" of the Palestinian people and reiterated his call for a ceasefire.

❗️Vladimir Putin hinted at Russian support for the potential return of Western Ukrainian border regions once annexed by Stalin from Poland, Hungary & Romania.

⚡️Putin directly inferred that Russia would not oppose the "re-annexation" of these regions back to their former countries noting that he is 100% certain this is what residents of those Ukrainian border want.

⚠️Potentially:

🇺🇦Transcarpathia back to Hungary 🇭🇺
🇺🇦Galicia & Volyn back to Poland 🇵🇱
🇺🇦Bukovina back to Romania 🇷🇴

🇲🇩📊⚡️ Last image, nearly half of all Moldovans believe their country should have a balanced foreign policy, not favorizing neither the EU or Russia.

🇲🇩🗳📊 In a new voting poll, Maia Sandu would be defeated in the 2nd round of the presidential elections if she were to face off with the pro-Russian candidate, Igor Dodon or the pro-Western candidate, Ion Ceban.
